A smart home for elderly parents makes everyday tasks easier. Lights come on as they walk at night, they can open the front door from a chair, and the family gets an alert when something needs attention. In a finished Dubai villa or apartment, a wireless system usually takes our team a couple of days to fit, with no cutting into walls.

This guide covers what helps most, what to keep simple and where technology is not the answer. It is written for families adapting a home for a parent, and for anyone who wants daily life at home to take less effort. There is also a short section for interior designers and architects near the end.

What helps most in a home for an older parent?

Start with lighting, the front door and alerts. These cover the most common worries: moving around at night, letting carers and visitors in, and knowing all is well at home.

After that, add comfort controls that take small daily jobs away. Keep the list short. Your parent will find a system with a few well-chosen features easier to learn and trust.

  • Night lighting that turns on by itself in the bedroom, hallway and bathroom
  • A smart lock and video intercom, so your parent can see who is at the door and open it without rushing
  • Emergency call buttons or fall detection
  • Alerts to the family's phones for a water leak, the alarm, or no movement by a set time
  • AC that has already cooled the home when your parent gets back
  • Motorised curtains and blinds that open and close on a schedule
  • Voice control for people who find switches or phones hard to use

How can lighting make night-time moves easier?

Motion sensors turn on soft, low light along the route from bed to bathroom, then switch it off once the room is empty. Your parent does not have to find a switch in the dark, and the light is gentle enough not to wake them fully.

Switches matter as much as sensors. We offer switch panels from 18 high-end suppliers, so you can choose keypads with clear labels and buttons that are easy to see and press. Each button can do one obvious thing, such as "Night" or "All off".

We also install tunable white lighting, which moves from cooler light during the day to warmer light in the evening. It runs on a schedule, so nobody has to adjust it.

What if my parent falls or needs help?

We fit emergency call buttons and fall detection, so your parent can raise an alert without reaching for a phone. Decide together where the buttons go, for example beside the bed and in the bathroom.

Symphony, our automation platform designed to make large, complex homes easier to manage, can also warn you when nobody has moved by a set time. For example, if nobody has been in the kitchen by 10am, the family gets an alert.

You need to understand one limit. We do not have monitoring centres in Dubai, so these alerts go only to the family's phones through the app. Nobody outside the family will respond, so agree in advance who answers each alert and who has a key.

What alerts can the family get?

Alerts arrive in the Avario app on the phones you choose. Common ones are the front door opening, a water leak, the alarm going off or someone ringing the intercom.

Several family members can use the app, including adult children who live elsewhere, and each can have their own permission level. For example, one person can control everything while another only receives alerts.

For water, we offer several levels of protection, from a simple alarm to valves that close by themselves when a sensor gets wet. Our guide to water leak detection and automatic shut-off explains the options.

The app also runs a "watchdog", a system that checks everything is working and warns you about problems such as a low sensor battery. If you add cameras, recordings are saved inside the home, with an optional cloud backup, so your family keeps control of them. Decide with your parent where cameras go. Many people are happy to have the front door covered and nothing inside their living space.

How does voice control work, and what if the internet drops?

Voice control lets your parent turn on lights, close curtains or change the AC by speaking. Symphony works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Siri. Voice control helps most for people with poor eyesight, shaky hands or limited movement.

Voice assistants rely on the internet. Amazon says Alexa can handle only a limited set of requests on certain Echo devices when it is offline. Apple says internet problems can stop HomePod from completing Siri requests. That is why we never make voice the only way to control a room.

The rest of the system does not need the internet. While your home Wi-Fi is working, the app still controls the home from inside it. If the network goes down, the keypads on the wall still work. The lock keeps working locally too. Only remote access, such as opening the door from a phone away from home, stops until the internet is back.

How can a smart lock help with carers and visitors?

A smart lock lets your parent open the front door without walking to it, and the family can give each carer their own code. When someone rings, a video intercom shows who is there, and the door opens from the same app.

We fit locks from several manufacturers, including Oji, Tedee, Yale and Aqara, with Akuvox and Ubiquiti UniFi Protect for intercoms. Which lock suits a door depends on how the door is used and how much sun it gets. The locks we recommend have a physical key or emergency power option for when the batteries run flat.

Opening the door can also set off other things through Symphony. For example, the hall lights can come on and the AC can move to a comfortable temperature as your parent walks in. Our smart door lock buying guide goes into more detail.

Can the AC and curtains look after themselves?

Yes. Symphony can start cooling a room before your parent gets home, either from the app or based on where their phone is. In a Dubai summer, that means they come home to a cool house.

Family members can check and change the AC from their own phones, so nobody has to talk your parent through the remote control by phone. We connect AC units of every brand and type.

Motorised curtains and blinds can open at sunrise and close at sunset, and these schedules run without the internet. We usually suggest Somfy or Aqara motors, and we work alongside your curtain supplier.

Wired or wireless for a parent's home?

In a finished villa or apartment, wireless is usually the simplest choice. In the UAE we use Zigbee, the wireless standard we find works best here, and fitting usually takes a couple of days.

If you are building a new villa or planning a major renovation, we recommend wired KNX. KNX is the wiring standard most wired systems use, and the cables go in before the walls are closed. Our guide to when wireless works and when to wire compares the two.

Who looks after the system once it is in?

Our own team does all the programming and setting up. At handover, we run a training session where your parent learns the keypads and the family learns the app. We also reset logins and give you written records of the system.

Most support happens through the support chat in the app. Your family approves each remote session, and you can switch remote access off completely. During business hours (Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm), we can reply in the chat straight away, and call-outs are within 4 hours.

A maintenance plan can include checking the batteries in locks and leak sensors, so nothing fails without anyone noticing. We build each plan around what your home needs.

What affects the cost?

The cost depends mostly on how much you want to control and what kind of home it is. Night lighting in a few rooms and a smart lock is a much smaller job than a whole villa.

Our guide to smart home costs in Dubai explains these factors in more detail. After the home visit, you get a written quote for your parent's home.

  • The size of the home and how many rooms you include
  • Wireless for a finished home, or wired KNX for a new build or renovation
  • Which features you choose: lighting, call buttons, locks, leak protection, AC, curtains, cameras
  • Which brands of keypads, locks and motors you prefer
  • Whether you add a maintenance plan

Are you an interior designer or architect planning for an older client?

Bring us in as early as you can. We work from your drawings to plan keypads, sensors and call buttons before the design is fixed.

We can deliver switch plate samples from our 18 suppliers, so you and your client can see and handle the finishes. To talk through a project, call our team on +971 4 458 2205.

Questions people ask

Can my parent still use normal switches? Yes. Every room keeps keypads on the wall, and they keep working if the internet or home network goes down.

Will an alarm or fall alert go to a response centre? No. We do not have monitoring centres in Dubai, so alerts go to the family's phones through the app. Agree who will respond before you rely on it.

Can more than one family member get alerts? Yes. Several people can use the app, including adult children who live elsewhere, and each can have a different permission level.

How long does installation take? A wireless system in a finished home usually takes a couple of days. Wired KNX goes in during a new build or a major renovation.

Will my parent's privacy be respected? Camera recordings stay inside the home, and they are backed up to the cloud only if you choose. You approve every remote support session and can turn remote access off.
