Smart home help for homeowners in Dubai: where to start
Five common starting points for a smart home in Dubai, from getting your keys to building a villa, and the guide to read for each.
Smart home help for homeowners in Dubai starts with your situation, not a product list. Find the one closest to yours below. Its guide explains what to plan first, what to ask and what can wait.
Each situation has its own best time to act and its own right system. A new villa build suits wired control. A rented holiday apartment usually needs something lighter.
Have you just got your keys?
Plan before the furniture and fit-out go in. Cables are easier to run, and switches easier to move, in an empty home.
A wireless system usually takes a couple of days to install. Wired KNX, the wiring standard most wired systems use, fits best during a build or a major renovation. Read Just got your keys? Smart home planning at off-plan handover.
Are you buying a home that already has a smart system?
Ask for the passwords and the configuration file before you move in. This file holds all the system's programming, and without it you cannot change or upgrade anything.
If the file is missing, we rebuild the configuration and you keep a copy. Our handover also removes old users, resets logins and trains your household. See Buying or moving into a home with an existing smart system.
Are you building your own villa?
We advise wired KNX for new villas, including three-bedroom homes. The cables go in before the walls are closed, so start planning while the drawings are still changing.
Our team can run the cable, or we can work with your MEP contractor (the team doing the mechanical, electrical and plumbing work). Read Planning automation for your own villa build.
Are you letting a holiday home?
Start with what you need to manage from a distance: door locks with guest codes, AC control and leak sensors.
If the internet drops, the locks keep working at the door, but remote access stops until it returns. See Smart homes for holiday homes and rental landlords.
Are you setting up a home for a parent or relative?
Start with what makes each day easier: lighting scenes on simple keypads, a door they can open after seeing the visitor on the intercom, and leak alerts. The keypads keep working if the home network goes down.
Alerts go to the app only, as we do not run a monitoring centre in Dubai. Agree early who in the family receives them. Read Smart homes for easier and independent living.
What affects the cost?
It depends on a few things you can already answer. Your written quote then sets out the figures for your home.
- The size of your home and how many rooms you want to control
- Wired or wireless
- New build, renovation or a finished home
- The brands of switches, locks and motors you choose
- How much you control: lighting, AC, curtains and blinds, security or all of them
What is the next step?
